Type species: ¤ Thalassolituus oleivorans Yakimov et al. 2004.
Etymology: Gr. fem. n. thalassa, the sea; L. masc. n. lituus, the crooked staff borne by the augurs, an augur's crook, a crook; N.L. masc. n. Thalassolituus, a marine, curve-shaped bacterium.

Etymology: L. masc. adj. marinus, of the sea, the origin of the sample from which the type strain was isolated.
