Etymology: Gr. adj. thermos, hot, Gr. pref. an, not, Gr. n. aer aeros, air; L. neut. n. bacterium, a small rod; N.L. neut. n. Thermoanaerobacterium, a rod which grows in the absence of air at high temperatures.
