Type species: ¤ Thermobacillus xylanilyticus Touzel et al. 2000.
Etymology: Gr. adj. thermos, hot; L. dim. n. bacillus, small rod; N.L. masc.  n. Thermobacillus, small thermophilic rod.

Thermobacillus composti Watanabe et al. 2007, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) KWC4 = DSM 18247 = JCM 13945.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AB254031.
Etymology: N.L. gen. neut. n. composti, of/from compost.

Thermobacillus xylanilyticus Touzel et al. 2000, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) XE = CNCM I-1017.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AJ005795.
Etymology: N.L. n. xylanum, xylan, a plant polysaccharide; Gr. adj. lutikos, able to loosen, able to dissolve; N.L. masc. adj. xylanilyticus, hydrolyzing xylan.

Note: The type strain has been deposited in the Collection Nationale de Cultures Microbiennes (CNCM I-1017) as a patent strain. According to J.P. Touzel [1], this strain is available without restrictions to the scientific community. However, according to D. Fritze (cited in N.A. Logan [2]), the strain CNCM I-1017 is unavailable.
