Type species: ¤ Thermogymnomonas acidicola Itoh et al. 2007.
Etymology: Gr. adj. thermos, hot; Gr. adj. gymnos, nude; Gr. fem. n. monas, unit; N.L. fem. n. thermogymnomonas, hot, cell wall-less unit.
Valid publication: ITOH (T.), YOSHIKAWA (N.) and TAKASHINA(T.): Thermogymnomonas acidicola gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel thermoacidophilic, cell wall-less archaeon in the order Thermoplasmatales, isolated from a solfataric soil in Hakone, Japan. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2007, 57, 2557-2561.

Thermogymnomonas acidicola Itoh et al. 2007, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) IC-189 = DSM 18835 = JCM 13583.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AB269873.
Etymology: N.L. n. acidum (from L. adj. acidus, sour), an acid; L. suff. -cola (from L. n. incola), an inhabitant; N.L. n. acidicola, an inhabitant of an acidic environment.
