Thermosyntropha Svetlitshnyi et al. 1996, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Thermosyntropha lipolytica Svetlitshnyi et al. 1996.
Etymology: Gr. adj. thermos, hot; Gr. n. syntrophos, foster brother or sister; N.L. fem. n. Thermosyntropha, “foster sisters liking it hot”, referring to the fact that the bacterium grows at elevated temperatures on fatty acids only in syntrophic cultures with H2-utilizing micro-organisms.
Valid publication: SVETLITSHNYI (V.), RAINEY (F.) and WIEGEL (J.): Thermosyntropha lipolytica gen. nov., sp. nov., a lipolytic, anaerobic, alkalitolerant, thermophilic bacterium utilizing short- and long-chain fatty acids in syntrophic coculture with a methanogenic archaeum. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1996, 46, 1131-1137.

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) JW/VS-265 = ATCC 700317= DSM 11003.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: X99980.
Etymology: Gr. n. lipos, fat; N.L. fem. adj. lytica (from Gr. fem. adj. lutikê), able to loosen, able to dissolve; N.L. fem. adj. lipolytica, referring to the ability to hydrolyze lipids to glycerol and fatty acids.
Valid publication: SVETLITSHNYI (V.), RAINEY (F.) and WIEGEL (J.): Thermosyntropha lipolytica gen. nov., sp. nov., a lipolytic, anaerobic, alkalitolerant, thermophilic bacterium utilizing short- and long-chain fatty acids in syntrophic coculture with a methanogenic archaeum. Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) L-60 = CGMCC 1.5161 = JCM 17260.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: HM807481.
Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. tengcongensis, of or pertaining to Tengcong, China, where the type strain was isolated.
Valid publication: ZHANG (F.), LIU (X.) and DONG (X.): Thermosyntropha tengcongensis sp. nov., a thermophilic bacterium that degrades long-chain fatty acids syntrophically. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2012, 62, 759-763.
