🧍 According to Silva (1980) as circumscribed in the Index Nominum Genericorum, the Nostocaceae include Nodularia Mertens ex Bornet et Flahault 1886 (nom. cons), the type of Nodulariaceae Elenkin 1916; Isocystis, the type of lsocystaceae (Borzì) Elenkin 1917; Aulosira, the type of Aulosiraceae (Bornet et Flahault) Woronichin 1926; Anabaena Bory ex Bornet et Flahault 1886, which is a later homonym and the type of the family name Anabaenaceae Elenkin 1938, which is not in accordance with the rules of the ICNafp; Aphanizomenon, the type of Aphanizomenaceae Elenkin 1938; and "with a query" Pseudonostoc, the type of Pseudonostocaceae Elenkin 1949, apparently a superfluous name initially applied to a family that included both Camptothrix, the type of Camptotrichaceae W. West et G. S. West 1897, and Isocystis. Silva (1980) also remarks: "The provision for later starting points in the nomenclature of filamentous blue-green algae complicates the task of ascertaining correct family names. Four commonly recognized families – Nostocaceae, Oscillatoriaceae, Rivulariaceae, and Scytonemataceae – were described at least 40 years before the starting points.
