Etymology: At.ti.bar.to.nel’la. L. masc. n. atta, father (term of respect used when addressing old men); N.L. fem. dim. n. Bartonella, a bacterial genus name; N.L. fem. dim. n. Attibartonella, because this taxon is considered to be in a an early evolutionary stage to a symbiotic lifestyle and to have retained a large ancestral gene pool of the last common ancestor of Bartonella and related bacteria
