The genus Caulobacter is polyphyletic and only one of the lineages of Caulobacter species can retain the generic name. Under Rules 39a and 39b, the generic name must be retained for the genus that includes the type species. The lack of a type culture for the type species (Caulobacter vibrioides) complicates the decision.Publication:
