  • The Subcommittee on the taxonomy of Mollicutes discussed the impact on the nomenclature of the Mollicutes of recent taxonomic studies on Mycoplasma mycoides indicating that it needed reclassification. Because Mycoplasma mycoides is the type species of the genus, any change in its name would have an impact on the names of all other organisms belonging to the genus, with noteworthy consequences on quarantine procedures and regulations. In order to avoid the social health issues that can arise following the renaming of regulated micro-organisms, a possible solution would be to define a new type species for the genus Mycoplasma.
