⊕ Emendation accompanied by the proposal of 1 new species in the genus.
🧍 According to Podkopaeva et al. 2009, the type strain of Spirillum volutans is not currently available. If a strain on which the original description was based cannot be found and if a neotype strain is not proposed [Rule 18c of the Bacteriological Code (1990 Revision)], the authors request that the Judicial Commission places the name Spirillum volutans Ehrenberg 1832 (Approved List 1980) on the list of rejected names and designates Spirillum winogradskii Podkopaeva et al. 2009 as a novel type species. The authors also suggest that the description of Spirillum winogradskii Podkopaeva et al. 2009 becomes the description of the genus Spirillum Ehrenberg 1832 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Podkopaeva et al. 2009. As yet this request is provisional.
