Etymology: Va.cu.o.lo.ne’ma. vacuolo, derived from the Latin “vacuus” meaning “empty”; Gr. neut. n. nêma, from the Greek “nēma, ” meaning “thread” or “filament”; N.L. neut. n. Vacuolonema, refers to the genus’ distinctive feature, which are the vacuole-like structures at the cross-walls
