The etymology given by Stackebrandt and Schumann 2004 is the following: N.L. neut. n. xylan (sic), xylan a polysaccharide; Gr. adj. mikros, small; Gr. masc. n. bios, life; N.L. neut. n. Xylanimicrobium, xylan-hydrolysing microbe. However, according to Rule 65, the correct name should be Xylanimicrobius and this name should be in the masculine gender. Consequently, the etymology provided above (see Etymology) has been changed in order to have a name in the neuter gender.
