Etymology: ski.o.phi.la. Gr. fem. n. skia, shade (σκιά); N.L. fem. adj. suff. -phila, loving; N.L. fem. adj. skiophila, from a shaded environment, with reference to the preference of these cyanobacterial strains for a low light intensity, ecophenes of the same species from the Italian hypogea are shown in Komarek and Anagnostidis (2005, fig. 235)
