Etymology: From the Greek σκιά = shade, phila = loving. Albertania skiophila = Albertania from a shaded environment, with reference to the preference of these cyanobacterial strains for a low light intensity. Ecophenes of the same species from the Italian hypogea are shown in Komarek and Anagnostidis (2005, fig. 235)
