L. prep. de, off, away; N.L. neut. n. halogenum, halogen [from Swedish, coined by Swedish chemist Baron Jöns Jakob Berzelius (1779-1848) from Gr. hals halos "salt" +-gen "to produce; " so called because a salt is formed in reactions involving these elements]; N.L. neut. part. adj. dehalogenans, dehalogenating, split off halogens, referring to the characteristic property of the micro-organism to dehalogenate various chlorophenolic compounds
