Etymology:
pi.sci.ci.da. L. gen. masc. n.piscis, fish; L. masc. n. suff.-cida, killer; from L. inf. v.caedere, to kill; N.L. masc. n.piscicida, fish-killer, causing fish mortality (nominative in apposition)

Nomenclatural status:
validly published under the ICNP
heterotypic synonym, validly published under the ICNP, distinct rank
Notes:
⏲ According to Ottem et al. (2009), this species is a later heterotypic synonym of Francisellanoatunensis (Mikalsen et al. 2007) Ottem et al. 2009.Publication:

❗ Francisellapiscicida is the correct name instead if this species is regarded as a separate species (i.e., if its nomenclatural type is not assigned to another species whose name is validly published, legitimate and not rejected and has priority) within a separate genus Francisella.

🧍 In the effective publication, the etymology is erroneously cited as follows: piscicida L. f.; from L. pisces m. fish, suff. -cida from L. f. caedere, to kill, 'fish-killer' i.e. causing fish mortality.Publication:
Euzeby JP. List of Bacterial Names with Standing in Nomenclature: a folder available on the Internet. Int J Syst Bacteriol 1997; 47:590-592.
🧍 The 16S rDNA sequences of the type strain of Francisella piscicida Ottem et al. 2008 and of the type strain of Francisella philomiragia subsp. noatunensis Mikalsen et al. 2007 show 100% similarity. The DNA-DNA hybridization data against the type of Francisella philomiragia suggest that Francisella philomiragia subsp. noatunensis and Francisella piscicida may constitute heterotypic synonyms. If this were to be the case then the rule of priority would apply and the epithet noatunensis in Francisella philomiragia subsp. noatunensis Mikalsen et al. 2007 would have priority over the epithet piscicida in Francisella piscicida Ottem et al. 2008. Whether the epithet noatunensis would be used at the rank of subspecies or species will depend on further research.Publication:
