L. masc. adj. nitrosus, nitrous (Latin masculine adjective); N.L. masc. n. coccus, sphere (Latin masculine adjective); N.L. gen. fem. n. wardiae, of Ward, named after the American microbiologist Bess B. Ward for her pioneering work on the marine Nitrogen cycle including the study of AOB in the genus Nitrosococcus
