Depending upon how the rules are applied the type species may be either Paenibacillus polymyxa (Prazmowski 1880) Ash et al. 1994 or Paenibacillus durus corrig. (Smith and Cato 1974) Collins et al. 1994. In 2002, the Judicial Commission decided that the type species of the genus Paenibacillus is Paenibacillus polymyxa.
