Gr. masc. n. aêr (gen. aeros), air; N.L. neut. adj. suff. -philum, friend, loving; from Gr. neut. adj. philon, friend; N.L. neut. adj. aerophilum, air-loving, because of its ability to use oxygen for growth in contrast to all other described species of the genus Pyrobaculum
