Genus names of Latin origin, common gender

General remarks

Genus names whose last component is a Latin noun (or Latin adjective treated like a noun) obtain their gender from the gender of that noun [Rule 65 (1), Rule 65 (2)]. However, that noun may be in any gender or may be either in masculine or feminine gender. In such a situation, the gender of the genus name has to be chosen by the original authors. If this did not happen the gender can be chosen by subsequent authors. A list of genus names formed in that manner and being in the common gender or being in either the masculine or the feminine gender is provided below. Names with Latin components in other positions are not listed here. See also the LPSN introductory page on forming names.
