Subspecies epithets whose last component is a present participle (usually ending in -ens or -ans) can be in any gender. They are treated like Group B adjectives and belong to the third declension. The actual gender is determined by the gender of the genus name [Rule 12c (1), Rule 13b]. A list of epithets formed in that manner is provided below. Genus names and species names derived from present participles are not listed here. A special case is genes, which originally is an Ancient Greek suffix meaning "born from" but is nowadays mainly used as a Neolatin suffix meaning "producing". See also the LPSN introductory page on forming names.
In the case of a ☞ new combination these epithets must not be adapted to the gender of the genus name. This is a special case of Group B adjectives.
