Roman et al. (2024) give "di.gi.ta’tis. N.L. masc. adj. digitatis, having fingers" as etymology. Couch (1963) gabe no etymology, but digitata is a Latin adjective found in classical dictionaries (e.g., p. 577 in Lewis and Short 1955). So, this would be L. fem. adj. digitata, resulting in L. masc. adj. digitatus. Furthermore, digitatis has a suffix that indicates an is-is-e adjective (Group B), so its feminine form would also be digitatis, but this clashes with its use by Couch, where we find digitata.
