The data available in the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (henceforth abbreviated LPSN), including the data available on the download page and the data available via the LPSN API, are distributed under a CC BY-SA 4.0 license. The more specific requests made by LPSN, in line with that license, are exactly the following:

1. Specification of attribution. The CC BY-SA 4.0 includes the Section 3(a)(A), which specifies how to attribute the shared material. It is stated therein that "identification of the creator(s) of the Licensed Material" must be done "in any reasonable manner requested by the Licensor". LPSN requests the following:

1a. If you use material originating from LPSN in a publication, you must cite at least the most recent of the LPSN references given below in that publication. Since citing other scientific publications is a general requirement for scientific publications, and preferred over citing a web site, it is certainly "reasonable" to request the citation of works on LPSN (and not just the LPSN web site) if LPSN is used in a publication.

1b. If you redistribute material originating from LPSN electronically, you must include a link to the specific LPSN page from which this material was obtained. For instance, if you display information from LPSN about a certain taxon name on your website, you must link from this page to the LPSN page about that taxon name. See also Section 3(a)(A)(v) of the license: since all material obtainable from LPSN even includes an URI to link back to LPSN, it is "reasonably practicable" to do so.

2. Specification of commercial use. Use of material for commercial purposes that was obtained from LPSN is allowed if in agreement with the license. Less restricted usages can be explicitly permitted by the maintainers of LPSN. Negotiation with the maintainers may well yield an agreement about a specified usage by a specified party. DSMZ has developed a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) for this purpose, which parties interested in a kind of commercial use of LPSN data that is not in agreement with the license would need to sign.

3. Specification of access. Automated download of material from LPSN is forbidden unless it is done via the LPSN download page or via the LPSN API or it is explicitly permitted by the maintainers of LPSN. Negotiation with the maintainers may well yield an agreement about a specified usage by a specified party.

The clauses on attribution are necessary to support the long-term maintenance of LPSN. The additional offer regarding commercial use takes into account that certain commercial uses not in full agreement with the license could be permitted. The restrictions regarding automated data access to LPSN do not violate the license and are intended to reduce the load on the LPSN page and to increase efficiency and accuracy of the data transfer.

LPSN is an authoritative source of prokaryotic nomenclature but is not an authoritative source of clinical, medical, veterinary, phytopathological or legal information. LPSN provides assessments of the relevance of prokaryotic taxa as human, animal or plant pathogens solely in order to assist clinical, medical, veterinary, phytopathological and other practitioners in keeping track of proposals regarding the nomenclature of these taxa. Although LPSN attempts to reflect as accurately as possible the scientific literature available to LPSN on these taxa, LPSN’s health-related assessments must not be used to draw conclusions in clinical, medical, veterinary, phytopathological or other practice. For example, the LPSN list of potential or established pathogens may be incomplete at any time. If specific advice on human, animal or plant health is required, a qualified professional in the field should be consulted.
