Etymology: Gr. pref. an, without; M.L. oxy, shortened from oxygenium, oxygen; N.L. bacter, masc. equivalent of Gr. neut. n. bakterion, rod or staff; N.L. masc. n. Anoxybacter, rod growing without oxygen.
