Etymology: N.L. masc. n. Garrity, named after George M. Garrity, professor at Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, USA, the former editor of Bergey's Manual and current chief editor of Standards in Genomic Sciences; N.L. fem. n. Garritya, a genus named after George M. Garrity.
