Etymology: Gr. n. hals, halos, salt; Gr. fem. n. aktis, aktinos, a ray; Gr. masc. n. mukês, fungus; N.L. masc. n. Haloactinomyces, salt-loving ray fungus, referring to a halophilic actinomycete.
