Etymology: Gr. adj. planktos, wandering, floating; N.L. neut. n. microbium (from Gr. adj. mikros, small, and Gr. n. bios, life), a microbe; N.L. neut. n. Planctomicrobium, floating microbe.

Planctomicrobium piriforme Kulichevskaya et al. 2015, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) P3=DSM 26348=VKM B-2887.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: KP161655.
Etymology: L. n. pirum, a pear; L. adj. suffix -formis -is -e (from L. n. forma, figure, shape, appearance) -like, in the shape of; N.L. neut. adj. piriforme, pear-shaped.
