Etymology: L. masc. n. vicinus, neighbour; L. v. amare, love; N. L. masc. n. bacter, a short rod; rod-shaped bacterium, that loves its neighbour referring to the strong formation of aggregates even during growth in rapidly shaken liquid cultures.
