However, later 16S rRNA sequence comparisons indicated that Methanoplanus species are closely related to members of the genera Methanomicrobium Balch and Wolfe 1981, Methanogenium Romesser et al. 1981, and Methanoculleus Maestrojuán et al. 1990, which all belong to the family Methanomicrobiaceae Balch and Wolfe 1981. Therefore, the genus Methanoplanus should be placed within this family and the family Methanoplanaceae Wildgruber et al. 1984 should no longer be recognized.
