😢 The terminology used by the authors is in line with many other taxonomic studies and does not negatively affect their main results; some improvements may nevertheless be possible. Using the term "phylogenetic data" (or equivalent) for sequence data is not advocated. Whether taxa can have "members" is debatable. See the LPSN phylogeny page for details.

🧍 Albuquerque et al. have isolated four acidophilic, slightly thermophilic or thermophilic Gram-positive strains (strains FR-3, FR-6, FR-1b and FR-11) from solfataric soil at Furnas on the Island of Sao Miguel in the Azores. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that these organisms represented two novel species of the genus Alicyclobacillus Wisotzkey et al. 1992. Based on the distinct biochemical and chemotaxonomic characteristics, the name Alicyclobacillus hesperidum Albuquerque et al. 2000 is proposed for the species represented by strains FR-11 and FR-1b. The isolates FR-3 and FR-6 cannot be distinguished from the type strain of Alicyclobacillus acidocaldarius (Darland and Brock 1971) Wisotzkey et al. 1992. So, a formal name for this new genomic species ("Alicyclobacillus genomic species 1") is not proposed.Publication:
