N.L. masc. adj. neustonensis, intended to mean occurring at the air-water interface layer [incorrectly formed: not a location]; from Gr. masc. adj. neustos, swimming (floating), referring to occurrence of the bacterium as a member of the neuston (organisms floating at the air-water interface surface layer of a body of water)
