Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Afipia, derived from the abbreviation AFIP, for the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, where the type strain of the type species was isolated.

Etymology: N.L. fem. gen. n. birgiae, of Birg, in honour of Marie-Laure Birg, a technician, for her many contributions to the isolation of strict intracellular bacteria, especially Tropheryma whipplei.
