Type species: ¤ Alloiococcus otitis Aguirre and Collins 1992.
Etymology: Gr. adj. alloios, different; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), coccus; N.L. masc. n. Alloiococcus, different coccus, referring to the phylogenetic distinctiveness of the organism.

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) 7760 = ATCC 51267= CCUG 32997 = CIP 103508 = IFO (now NBRC) 15545 = NCIMB 702890 (formerly NCFB 2890).

Etymology: N.L. gen. n. otitis (sic), of ear inflammation.
