Type order: ¤ Rickettsiales Gieszczykiewicz 1939 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. alpha, the letter a; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a small rod; suff. -ia, ending to denote a class; N.L. neut. pl. n. Alphabacteria, name proposed to formalize the earlier informal designation as α-proteobacteria.
