Type species: ¤ Anaerobiospirillum succiniciproducens Davis et al. 1976 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. prefix an, not; Gr. n. aer aeros, air; Gr. n. bios, life; N.L. dim. neut. n. spirillum, a small spiral; N.L. neut. n. Anaerobiospirillum, anaerobic small spiral.

Etymology: N.L. n. acidum succinicum, succinic acid; L. part. adj. producens, producing; N.L. part. adj. succiniciproducens, producing succinic acid.

Anaerobiospirillum thomasii Malnick 1997, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) A273/88 = ATCC 700432= CCUG 46380 = DSM 11806 = NCTC 12467.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AJ420985.
Etymology: N.L. gen. n. thomasii, of Thomas, named after M.E.M. Thomas (Public Health Laboratory Service, 1947-1984), whose interest in and enthusiasm for uncommon medical bacterial infections led to the initiation of this study.
