Etymology: Gr. pref. an, not; Gr. n. aer aeros, air; L. neut. n. filum, thread, referring to the very thin rod-shaped cells; N.L. neut. n. Anaerofilum, anaerobic thin rods.

Etymology: N.L. n. pentosum, sugar with five carbon atoms; L. part. adj. vorans, devouring, eating; L. part. adj. pentosovorans, pentose-devouring, fermenting pentose.
