Type order: ¤ Rhodospirillales Pfennig and Trüper 1971 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. pref. an, not, without; Gr. adj. oxus, acid or sour and in combined words indicating oxygen; Gr. n. phos photos, light; Gr. n. baktêria, staff, cane; N.L. fem. pl. n. Anoxyphotobacteriae, light-requiring bacteria that do not produce oxygen.
