Type order: ¤ Methanobacteriales Balch and Wolfe 1981.
Etymology: Gr. adj. archaios (Latin transliteration archaeos), ancient; N.L. n. bacter, a small rod; suff. -ia, ending to denote a class; N.L. neut. pl. n. Archaeobacteria, ancient bacteria.
