Etymology: Gr. n. blastos, bud shoot; Gr. fem. n. monas, a unit, monad; N.L. fem. n. Blastomonas, a budding monad.

Note: Yabuuchi et al. 1999 propose to transfer ¤ Blastomonas natatoria (Sly 1985) Sly and Cahill 1997 (the type species of the genus Blastomonas) to the genus ¤ Sphingomonas as ¤ Sphingomonas natatoria (Sly 1985) Yabuuchi et al. 1999, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Blastomonas to ¤ Sphingomonas.

1 According to Hiraishi et al. 2000 [1], phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data confirm that the genus Blastomonas is distinct from the genus ¤ Sphingomonas Yabuuchi et al. 1990 and other genera of the α-4 group of the α-Proteobacteria. These data turn down the proposal of Yabuuchi et al. 1999 [2, 3] for transfer of ¤ Blastomonas natatoria and ¤ Erythromonas ursincola Yurkov et al. 1997 to the genus ¤ Sphingomonas.

Note 1: According to Hiraishi et al. 2000 [1], Blastomonas natatoria (Sly 1985) Sly and Cahill 1997 emend. Hiraishi et al. 2000 and ¤ Erythromonas ursincola Yurkov et al. 1997 may be classified as different species in a single genus. According to Rule 44, the generic name Blastomonas Sly and Cahill 1997 has priority. Phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data confirm that the genus Blastomonas is distinct from the genus ¤ Sphingomonas Yabuuchi et al. 1990 and other genera of the α-4 group of the α-Proteobacteria. These data turn down the proposal of Yabuuchi et al. 1999 [2, 3] for transfer of Blastomonas natatoria and ¤ Erythromonas ursincola to the genus ¤ Sphingomonas.

About Blastomonas natatoria (Sly 1985) Sly and Cahill 1997 emend. Hiraishi et al. 2000, the paper by Yabbuchi et al. is not obvious!

Etymology: N.L. fem. gen. n. quesadae, from Quesada, named in honour of Professor Emilia Quesada, as a tribute to the contributions of her studies on halophilic bacteria.
