Buchnera Munson et al. 1991, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Buchnera aphidicola Munson et al. 1991.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Buchnera, named for Paul Buchner, German biologist who made extensive contributions to the study of endosymbiosis.
Valid publication: MUNSON (M.A.), BAUMANN (P.) and KINSEY (M.G.): Buchnera gen. nov. and Buchnera aphidicola sp. nov., a taxon consisting of the mycetocyte-associated, primary endosymbionts of aphids. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1991, 41, 566-568.

Buchnera aphidicola Munson et al. 1991, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) the primary endosymbiont found in the mycetocytes of Schizaphis graminum (green bug) is designated the type strain.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: not found.
Etymology: N.L. n. aphidum, an aphid; L. suff. -cola (from L. n. incola), inhabitant, dweller; N.L. n. aphidicola, aphid dweller (eof the aphid Schizaphis graminum).
