Type species: ¤ Buttiauxella agrestis Ferragut et al. 1982.
Etymology: N.L. fem. dim. n. Buttiauxella, named after René Buttiaux, a French microbiologist for his numerous contributions to the taxonomy of Enterobacteriaceae.

Etymology: L. fem. adj. agrestis, pertaining to land, fields; intended to mean living in the fields, so named because all original strains were isolated from unpolluted soils and water.
