Caminibacter Alain et al. 2002, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Caminibacter hydrogeniphilus Alain et al. 2002.
Etymology: L. n. caminus, a furnace; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod, staff; N.L. masc. n. Caminibacter, rod from a hydrothermal chimney, relating to the origin of the type species.
Valid publication: ALAIN (K.), QUERELLOU (J.), LESONGEUR (F.), PIGNET (P.), CRASSOUS (P.), RAGUÉNÈS (G.), CUEFF (V.) and CAMBON-BONAVITA (M.A.): Caminibacter hydrogeniphilus gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel thermophilic, hydrogen-oxidizing bacterium isolated from an East Pacific Rise hydrothermal vent. Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) AM1116 = CIP 107140 = DSM 14510.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AJ309655.
Etymology: N.L. n. hydrogenum (from Gr. n. hudôr, water; and Gr. v. gennaô, to produce), hydrogen (that which produces water, so called because it forms water when exposed to oxygen); N.L. masc. adj. philus (from Gr. masc. adj. philos), friend, loving; N.L. masc. adj. hydrogeniphilus, hydrogen-liking, referring to its ability to grow lithotrophically on H2.
