Type genus: "Cenarchaeum" DeLong and Preston 1996.
Etymology: N.L. neut. n. "Cenarchaeum", type genus of the order; suff. -ales, ending denoting an order; N.L. fem. pl. n. Cenarchaeales, the "Cenarchaeum" order.

Notes:
1 The type genus "Cenarchaeum" does not appear on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names, and has not been validly published since 1 January 1980. Consequently, Cenarchaeales Cavalier-Smith 2002 is illegitimate.
2 In the paper by Cavalier-Smith 2002, the type genus "Cenarchaeum" is erroneously cited as "Cenarchaeum" Preston et al. 1996.
