Etymology: Gr. n. kêtos, any sea-monster, whale; L. neut. n. bacterium, a rod; N.L. neut. n. Cetobacterium, a bacterium found in association with whales.

Etymology: N.L. gen. fem. n. somerae, of Somer, to honour Hannele Jousimies-Somer, a Finnish microbiologist, in recognition of her important contributions to anaerobic bacteriology and to clinical microbiology.
