Type species: ¤ Citricoccus muralis Altenburger et al. 2002.
Etymology: L. n. citrus, citrontree or citrus, an African tree; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), coccus; N.L. masc. n. Citricoccus, lemon-yellow-pigmented coccus.

Etymology: N.L. n. alkali (from Arabic article al, the; Arabic n. qaliy, ashes of saltwort), alkali; L. part. adj. tolerans, tolerating; N.L. part. adj. alkalitolerans, referring to the ability of the organism to tolerate alkaline media.
