Conglomeromonas Skerman et al. 1983, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Conglomeromonas largomobilis Skerman et al. 1983.
Etymology: L. v. conglomero,  to roll together, conglomerate; L. fem. n. monas, a unit, monad; N.L. fem. n. Conglomeromonas, monad forming in a [rounded] mass.
Valid publication: SKERMAN (V.B.D.), SLY (L.I.) and WILLIAMSON (M.L.): Conglomeromonas largomobilis gen. nov., sp. nov., a sodium-sensitive, mixed-flagellated organism from fresh waters. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1983, 33, 300-308.
Original article in IJSEM Online

Note: According to Rule 61, the original spelling should be changed to Conglomeratimonas (L. part. adj. conglomeratus, wound into a ball; Gr. n. monas, a unit, monad; N.L. fem. n. Conglomeratimonas, monad forming in a [rounded] mass).

¤ Azospirillum Tarrand et al. 1979 (Approved Lists 1980).

Notes:
1 The type species of Conglomeromonas is transferred in the genus Azospirillum. So, according to Rule 37a, the name Conglomeromonas must be changed to Azospirillum.
2 Ben Dekhil et al. 1997 [1] propose to transfer the subspecies Conglomeromonas largomobilis subsp. largomobilis to the genus Azospirillum as Azospirillum largimobile corrig. comb. nov. and to retain the genus Conglomeromonas by elevating the subspecies Conglomeromonas largomobilis subsp. parooensis to the type species of Conglomeromonas as Conglomeromonas parooensis sp. nov. However, the new species Conglomeromonas parooensis and the emendation of the genus Conglomeromonas have not been validly published. Moreover, according to Rule 37a(2) "Retention of a name in a sense which excludes the type can only be effected by conservation and only by the Judicial Commission (see also Rule 23a)". Later, Sly and Stackebrandt 1999 [2] propose that the subspecies Conglomeromonas largomobilis subsp. parooensis be transferred to the new genus ¤ Skermanella as ¤ Skermanella parooensis sp. nov.

¤ Azospirillum lipoferum (Beijerinck 1925) Tarrand et al. 1979 (Approved Lists 1980).

Note: According to Falk et al. 1986, Conglomeromonas largomobilis subsp. largomobilis Skerman et al. 1983 is a later heterotypic synonym of ¤ Azospirillum lipoferum (Beijerinck 1925) Tarrand et al. 1979 (Approved Lists 1980).

¤ Azospirillum largimobile corrig. (Skerman et al. 1983) Ben Dekhil et al. 1997, comb. nov.

Note: On the basis of DNA-DNA hybridization studies, Falk et al. 1986 [1] concluded that Conglomeromonas largomobilis subsp. largomobilis Skerman et al. 1983 is a later heterotypic synonym of Azospirillum lipoferum (Beijerinck 1925) Tarrand et al. 1979 (Approved Lists 1980). However, the similarity values of 47% between the type strains of Conglomeromonas largomobilis and Azospirillum lipoferum are considerably lower than the 70% similarity recommended for species of bacteria [2]. Analysis of the 16S rDNA sequence of Conglomeromonas largomobilis subsp. largomobilis supports a phylogenetic relationship with the species of the genus Azospirillum and Ben Dekhil et al. 1997 [3] transfer Conglomeromonas largomobilis subsp. largomobilis in the genus ¤ Azospirillum as ¤ Azospirillum largimobile corrig. (Skerman et al. 1983) Ben Dekhil et al. 1997, comb. nov. This proposal is validly published on the List no. 62 [4].

Conglomeromonas largomobilis subsp. parooensis Skerman et al. 1983, subsp. nov.
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) ACM 2042 = CIP 106994 = DSM 9527 = UQM 2042.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: X90760.
Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. parooensis, belonging/pertaining to the Paroo, referring to the Paroo Channel in southwest Queensland, Australia, the source of the water from which the organism was isolated.

¤ Skermanella parooensis Sly and Stackebrandt 1999, comb. nov.

Note: Conglomeromonas largomobilis subsp. parooensis Skerman et al. 1983 is not closely related to Conglomeromonas largomobilis subsp. largomobilis Skerman et al. 1983 [1, 2], not closely related to ¤ Azospirillum lipoferum (Beijerinck 1925) Tarrand et al. 1979 (Approved Lists 1980) [2], and Conglomeromonas largomobilis subsp. parooensis is phylogenetically distant and positioned outside the radiation of the majority of Azospirillum, including the type species [2]. Ben Dekhil et al. 1997 [2] propose to transfer the subspecies Conglomeromonas largomobilis subsp. largomobilis to the genus ¤ Azospirillum as ¤ Azospirillum largimobile corrig. comb. nov. and to retain the genus Conglomeromonas by elevating the subspecies Conglomeromonas largomobilis subsp. parooensis to the type species of Conglomeromonas as Conglomeromonas parooensis sp. Later, Sly and Stackebrandt 1999 [3] propose that the subspecies Conglomeromonas largomobilis subsp. parooensis be transferred to the new genus ¤ Skermanella as ¤ Skermanella parooensis sp. nov. However, Skermanella parooensis is a new combination (Skermanella parooensis (Skerman et al. 1983) Sly and Stackebrandt 1999) not a new species [4].
