Etymology: Gr. n. korallon, coral; Gr. masc. n. kokkos, berry; N.L. masc. n. Corallococcus coral-shaped coccus (i.e. with coral-shaped fruiting bodies).

Etymology: Gr. n. korallon, coral; L. suff. -oides [from Gr. suff. -eides (from Gr. n. eidos, that which is seen, form, shape, figure)], ressembling, similar; N.L. masc. adj. coralloides, coral-shaped.

Notes:
1 According to Dr. H. Reichenbach the type strain of Corallococcus macrosporus is the strain Cc m8 (= DSM 14697 = CIP 109128), not the strain Windsor M271 [the type strain of ¤ Myxococcus macrosporus (Krzemieniewska and Krzemieniewski 1926) Zahler and McCurdy 1974 (Approved Lists 1980)]. Consequently, Corallococcus macrosporus cannot be a new combination (basonym ¤ Myxococcus macrosporus) as cited in the effective publication.
