Etymology: L. n. defluvium, sewage, wastewater; L. fem. n. toga, a toga; N.L. fem. n. Defluviitoga, a toga isolated from wastewater.

Defluviitoga tunisiensis Ben Hania et al. 2012, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) SulfLac1 = DSM 23805 = JCM 17210.

Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. tunisiensis, of or belonging to Tunisia, the country where the bacterium was first isolated.
