Dehalococcoides Löffler et al. 2013, gen. nov. (Tpe genus of the order ¤ Dehalococcoidales Löffler et al. 2013; type genus of the family ¤ Dehalococcoidaceae Löffler et al. 2013).
Type species: ¤ Dehalococcoides mccartyi Löffler et al. 2013.
Etymology: L. prep. de, away, off; N.L. pref. halo- (from N.L. n. halogenum), halogen; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkus, grain, seed), coccus; L. suff. -oides, resembling, similar; N.L. masc.n. Dehalococcoides, coccus-shaped dehalogenating organism.
Valid publication: LÖFFLER (F.E.), YAN (J.), RITALAHTI (K.M.), ADRIAN (L.), EDWARDS (E.A.), KONSTANTINIDIS (K.T.), MÜLLER (J.A.), FULLERTON (H.), ZINDER (S.H.) and SPORMANN (A.M.): Dehalococcoides mccartyi gen. nov., sp. nov., obligate organohalide-respiring anaerobic bacteria relevant to halogen cycling and bioremediation, belong to a novel bacterial class, Dehalococcoidia classis nov., order Dehalococcoidales ord. nov. and family Dehalococcoidaceae fam. nov., within the phylum Chloroflexi. Dehalococcoides mccartyi Löffler et al. 2013, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) 195 = ATCC BAA-2266 = KCTC 15142.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: CP000027 (complete genome).
Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. mccartyi, of McCarty, in honour of Dr Perry L. McCarty for his visionary contributions to environmental science and engineering, engineering practice and education, including the field of microbial reductive dehalogenation.
