¤ Sulfurospirillum Schumacher et al. 1993 emend. Luijten et al. 2003.

Note: Luijten et al. 2003 propose to transfer ¤ Dehalospirillum multivorans Scholz-Muramatsu et al. 2002 (the type species of the genus Dehalospirillum) to the genus ¤ Sulfurospirillum as ¤ Sulfurospirillum multivorans (Scholz-Muramatsu et al. 2002) Luijten et al. 2003, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Dehalospirillum to ¤ Sulfurospirillum.

Type strain: (see also Global Catalogue of Microorganisms) DSM 12446 = JCM 15788.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: X82931.
Etymology: L. adj. multus, many; L. part. adj. vorans, devouring; N.L. part. adj. multivorans, devouring numerous kinds of substrates.
Valid publication: Validation List no. 88. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2002, 52, 1915-1916.
Effective publication: SCHOLZ-MURAMATSU (H.), NEUMANN (A.) MEßMER (M.), MOORE (E.) and DIEKERT (G.): Isolation and characterization of Dehalospirillum multivorans gen. nov., sp. nov., a tetrachloroethene-utilizing, strictly anaerobic bacterium. Arch. Microbiol., 1995, 163, 48-56.
Validation List no. 88 in IJSEM Online - Effective publication Online

Note: At the time of publication, the type strain was not deposited in two publicly accessible service collections in different countries, and Dehalospirillum multivorans Scholz-Muramatsu et al. 2002 was not validly published [Rules 27(3) and 30]. However, according to the Judicial Opinion 81, Dehalospirillum multivorans Scholz-Muramatsu et al. 2002 is now considered to be validly published, since deposit in a second culture collection in a different country has been documented.
