Desulfobulbus Widdel 1981, gen. nov. (Type genus of the family ¤ Desulfobulbaceae Kuever et al. 2006).
Type species: ¤ Desulfobulbus propionicus Widdel 1981.
Etymology: L. pref. de-, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; N.L. pref. desulfo-, desulfuricating (prefix used to characterize a dissimilatory sulfate-reducing procaryote); L. masc. n. bulbus, a bulb, an onion; N.L. masc. n. Desulfobulbus, onion-shaped sulfate reducer.

However, according to the Judicial Opinion 81, Desulfobulbus mediterraneus Sass et al. 2002 is now considered to be validly published, since deposit in a second culture collection in a different country has been documented.
